Ormond Beach, FL – A 58-year-old Winter Springs man is dead after his sport utility vehicle ran off Interstate 95 in Ormond Beach and hit several trees.
The victim – yet to be identified – was found dead at the scene around 2:10 PM Thursday on the southbound side of Mile Marker 270. That’s just north of the Granada Boulevard/State Road 40 exit.
Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Wanda Diaz says the victim was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer in the outside southbound lane when it went onto the west shoulder of the interstate.
“The front right side area of [the Ford] struck several trees,” Diaz added. “Due to the collision, [the Ford] rotated counterclockwise and came to final rest facing east.”
A firefighter with Volusia County Fire Services says the driver of the Ford called for help, saying he was injured and trapped in his vehicle. First responders found him dead in the vehicle on the side of the road a few minutes later.
No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and no other vehicles are believed to be involved, according to FHP’s accident report. It also noted that the victim was wearing his seat belt and that alcohol or drugs didn’t appear to be factors.
Traffic itself wasn’t blocked because of the accident scene.
