Ormond Beach, FL - 2 teenage boys are now in custody after a retired Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy says he was injured when they carjacked him in Ormond Beach.

The suspects – both 16 years old – were arrested by the Daytona Beach Police Department Wednesday night soon after crashing into an unmarked VCSO investigator’s vehicle on Briarwood Drive. WNDB News is not identifying the suspects due to their age.

The Ormond Beach Police Department says it all started around 6 PM Wednesday behind the old Olive Garden restaurant on State Road A1A near Andy Romano Beachfront Park.

The 67-year-old victim told officers he was looking for a place to dump some grease and oil and that he stopped his 2016 Nissan Altima behind the restaurant to see if there was some sort of dumpster he could use.

It was soon after he got out of the Altima – which he left with the engine running and the driver’s side door wide open – that he noticed a thin black teenage boy get out of an older-model sport utility vehicle that had just parked nearby.

According to the incident report, the boy walked towards and then sprinted towards the Nissan when the retired deputy spotted him, causing him to run back towards the vehicle.

The boy managed to get into the driver’s seat and fight off the retired deputy’s attempts to pull him out long enough to drive away with the SUV following behind.

The retired deputy hung onto the boy briefly after the car went into motion, but then let go after he was dragged a few feet, leading to him hitting his head on the ground.

The report noted that the retired deputy had a cut on top of his head that was “bleeding profusely” but he refused to go to the hospital after getting treated by paramedics at the scene.

Officers responded to the scene after the victim went to the nearby Charlie House restaurant for help and that’s when he told them there was a loaded .380 handgun holstered in the vehicle’s trunk along with 2 loaded magazines. The report didn’t say if police recovered the gun.

The teens have been charged with grand theft of a firearm and carjacking by OBPD and with trespass of an occupied conveyance and resisting arrest by VCSO.
