Daytona Beach, FL – All the record heat that hit the Daytona Beach area in November and December gave way to near-record rainfall in January.

The National Weather Service reports that Daytona Beach International Airport got 7.05 inches of the wet stuff as of Friday (January 29th). Meteorologists don’t expect that number to go any higher since rain chances are at 0% for the rest of the month.

The 7.05 inches makes it the 3rd wettest January on record for Daytona Beach, according to NWS statistics. That’s well over the area’s average rainfall of 2.74 inches for that month.

The wettest January on record is 7.16 inches in 1986 and the second wettest was 7.10 inches in 1979.

Most of that rainfall came on 2 days. January 17th reported 1.45 inches of rain while January 27th had 2.37 inches of rain. The latter set a record for that date.

There was also nearly an inch of rain recorded on the 3rd (0.71), the 15th (0.94) and the 22nd (0.93), per NWS stats.

NWS forecasters say to expect more rain and an increased risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes for the rest of the winter due to the El Nino effect.
