DeLand, FL – Detectives are investigating after the burned body of a man is found in a wooded area near DeLand.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says the body was discovered around 3:30 PM Saturday near a small fire that had been reported to the east of the Budget Inn on East New York Avenue.
VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson says a phone call from a witness led detectives to the scene.
“The victim had apparently built a fire in the woods that scorched some trees and brush,” Davidson noted.
VCSO deputies were called to the area the night before about a man who refused to leave after he was found sleeping on a bench by the motel, per Davidson.
“[He] was refusing to leave,” Davidson stated. “When deputies arrived, the complainant said the man could stay a little while longer but then would need to leave.”
Investigators aren’t saying at this point if the victim is the same man who was told to leave. He also hasn’t been identified at this time.
