02-16-16 burn accident NSB glass shop 1

New Smyrna Beach, FL – The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating after a man ends up with 2nd-degree burns on around 25% of his body while on the job.

The accident happened around 8:40 AM Tuesday at New Smyrna Beach Glass & Design Center on 823 South Dixie Freeway, according to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.

NSBFD Lieutenant Mike Greene says firefighters arrived on scene around 3 minutes after getting a call saying that there was a possible fire at the business.

“The business owner advised an employee had been burned and taken to Bert Fish Medical Center by a co-worker,” Greene added. “The fire had been extinguished with a dry chemical extinguisher prior to the fire department’s arrival.”

Greene says it appears that the victim used too much denatured alcohol just before cutting glass and the alcohol “spontaneously” erupted.

“No dollar loss to the building was sustained from the explosion,” Greene noted.

The victim – who suffered burns to his abdomen, back and hands – has yet to be identified by NSBFD, but Greene did add that he’ll have to be transferred to a hospital with a burn unit.
