Tallahassee, FL – A Melbourne Beach couple claims over $528 million dollars from last month’s record-setting Powerball jackpot.
That couple – David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith – claimed their winnings during a press conference on Wednesday at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.
State lottery officials say the $528,784,000 check was written out to the Nickel 95 Trust.
The couple – aged 55 and 70, respectively – told reporters that they’ve been regular Powerball players for many years and that they took the lump-sum option due to their ages.
They also noted that it took a while to formally claim their winnings because they wanted to consult with tax experts and plan for the changes in their life that will come with that much money.
Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie says the trust – created by the couple – will have all the money within 2 days.
The winning numbers for that $1.58 billion jackpot on January 13th were 4-18-19-27-34. The Powerball was 10.
2 other winning tickets were sold in Tennessee and Southern California. The jackpot was split between the 3 tickets.
The odds of winning were 1 in 292 million.
