Daytona Beach, FL – 7 people – including 6 children – are taken to the hospital in a serious crash that shut down part of Interstate 95 in Volusia County.
The accident happened around 10:30am Saturday on I-95 southbound at Mile Marker 261 near the International Speedway Boulevard/US 92 exit.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Kim Montes says a 2004 Ford sport utility vehicle driven by 32-year-old Brandy Outley of Wachula had one of its tires separate while going southbound, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and run off the road.
Troopers believe the Ford overturned multiple times, with fire officials saying at least 4 people inside were ejected by the time it came to a stop.
Outley and the 6 children all went to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, with 4 of them going as trauma alerts, according to a spokesman with Volusia County’s firefighters’ union.
FHP lists Outley in serious condition and 3 of the kids in critical condition. The condition of the other children haven’t been released at this time by FHP. Neither has any of the children’s names and ages.
FHP says no other vehicles were involved in the accident and it’s unclear at this time if Outley was wearing a seat belt, but troopers don’t believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
I-95 southbound was closed at the accident scene for over an hour while authorities processed the scene. It has since re-opened, according to FHP.
The crash is under investigation by FHP.
