Flagler Beach, FL – A Flagler Beach man is in custody after police say he hid inside a gas station convenience store until it was closed and then burglarized it.
20-year-old Christopher John Dugent Jr. is held on $5,000 bond at Flagler County Jail on burglary and grand theft charges following his arrest Monday night on State Road A1A in Flagler Beach.
Flagler Beach Police Department Captain Matt Doughney says it all started around 1:30am Sunday at the Shell on 700 South Ocean Shore Boulevard, 5 blocks south of where Dugent was arrested the following day.
“Officers responded to a business alarm,” Doughney added. “Upon officers’ arrival, the front door of the business was found unlocked and the investigation revealed that a white male subject had burglarized the business and fled on foot.”
Photos from the gas station’s security video were reviewed and the suspect was quickly identified as Dugent, per Doughney.
“The suspect in this case hid inside the business and waited until well after the store closed to rummage through the business,” Doughney said. “The video surveillance inside the business was extremely helpful in our ability to solve this case. Kudos to the business for investing in a quality system.”
A FBPD Sergeant spotted Dugent around 8pm Monday on the 200 block of South Ocean Shore and took him into custody at that point after Dugent agreed to an interview with a detective, according to Doughney.
“I’m extremely proud of the effort put in by everyone involved in this case,” Doughney noted. “The suspect committed the burglary early Sunday morning and by late Monday night he’s been located, interviewed and arrested for his crime by our officers. I think that’s great police work.”
FBPD hasn’t specified at this point what Dugent allegedly took from the business.
