Daytona Beach, FL – A 19-year-old convicted felon is back in Volusia County Jail for trying to steal another man’s vehicle while armed with a gun.

DeAndrew R. Hughley of Fulton Street in Daytona Beach was arrested late Wednesday night by the Daytona Beach Police Department and is held without bond at VCJ on numerous charges, including carjacking with a firearm, grand theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and resisting an officer.

DBPD says it all started around 10:40pm Wednesday in the parking lot of 918 West International Speedway Boulevard, which is the location of a Little Caesars pizza shop and a Boost Mobile phone store.

According to the incident report, a 27-year-old man told officers he had left his silver 2006 Hyundai near his job to go out with his girlfriend and was returning to the parking lot to get his car when Hughley tried to steal it.

Officers think the man went to his car and left it open with the keys inside when he walked back to his girlfriend’s car, giving the thief the chance to jump inside and try to drive away.

Per the report, the man heard his engine crank when speaking to his girlfriend and then ran back to pull the thief out of his vehicle.

DBPD says the man started punching and kicking Hughley in order to get him out of the Hyundai and that’s when Hughley reached under his shirt and told the man “Don’t make me use this.”

The man told DBPD afterwards he wasn’t sure what was under Hughley’s shirt, but he thought it might be a gun.

Police think the man’s girlfriend got out of her car, opened the driver’s door of the Hyundai and punched Hughley a few times until he got out of the car and took off running behind the nearby Pompano Pat’s store with his hand still under his shirt and yelling at the couple.

According to the report, the man took his gun out of the glove box and fired a round at Hughley as he ran off.

DBPD K-9 units tracked from the scene to the 200 block of DeSoto Street, where Hughley was spotted. A foot chase at that point led to Hughley’s capture by another officer near the intersection of DeSoto and Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard.

The report shows that the man’s girlfriend identified Hughley as the carjacker and that officers found a loaded black 9-millimeter Glock thrown onto a grassy area around 30 feet from where Hughley was caught.

DBPD thinks that Hughley had the Glock under his shirt the whole time but never used it. Officers also suspect that the Glock belonged to him because the gun itself was dry even though the grassy area was wet with dew.

A bicycle found near the Hyundai was also taken in as evidence because officers think that’s what Hughley was using for wheels before trying to take the car.

Police think a second man may have also been working with Hughley as a lookout, but he wasn’t found during the K-9 search.

That suspect is described as a black male in his late teens to early 20’s who stands around 5’9 and weighs around 150 pounds. DBPD believes he was wearing a long-sleeve white shirt, khaki pants and white sneakers.

A red bandanna and marijuana were also found in the Hyundai, but the victim claims those items belong to Hughley. Both were also seized as evidence.

The arrest report shows Hughley was convicted in January 2014 for robbery and that he refused to answer any questions from police.

Besides these latest charges, Hughley was also charged with 4 probation violations, including 2 for grand theft auto, 1 for grand theft and 1 for robbery.
