Pierson, FL – A 22-year-old man is dead after the van he was driving overturned and struck a tree.
The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened just before 4am Saturday on US 17 near Volusian Forest Trail in Pierson.
According to the accident report, the yet-to-be-identified victim was driving a 2000 Dodge Caravan north on 17 from County Road 3 when he over-corrected the van after it drifted towards the right shoulder.
Troopers believe the driver lost control of the van at this point as it crossed the southbound lanes of 17 and the left shoulder before going off the road, where the van then overturned and hit a tree.
The victim died at the scene and an autopsy will be done to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
FHP says the victim wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported, per FHP.
Troopers plan to release the victim’s name once his next of kin has been notified.
The road was closed for some time as part of the FHP investigation, but it has re-opened.
