Orange City, FL – A DeLeon Springs plumber ends up in the hospital after he was bitten by a poisonous snake while on the job.

46-year-old Troy Johns of Upson Avenue was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand for treatment once paramedics found him at the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie on 2701 South Woodland Boulevard in DeLand.

The DeLand Police Department says the call for help came in around 10:30am Tuesday after Johns tried to drive to the hospital but wasn’t able to keep going because he felt dizzy and ill.

Officers say Johns was working at an unknown location in Orange City when a foot-long coral snake bit his right index finger just before 10am Tuesday.

The snake was captured soon afterward in an empty plastic bottle and has since been sent to the Reptile Discovery Center on International Speedway Boulevard, according to DeLand PD Sergeant Chris Estes.

Johns’ condition isn’t known at this time.
