Daytona Beach, FL – The biggest part of a new way to cross International Speedway Boulevard on foot is now in place.
Construction workers spent most of Tuesday night into Wednesday morning working under bright lights while hoisting a nearly $4 million pedestrian bridge into place just west of Bill France Boulevard.
The Florida Department of Transportation shut down that 8-lane stretch of ISB/US 92 for most of the overnight while a crane helped put that bridge on top of the supports built along the outside of the road.
The road was re-opened to traffic just before 5am Wednesday, according to FDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Horton.
Horton added that the new bridge will need a little more work done before it’s ready to be used, including having lights, landscaping and fencing installed.
FDOT hopes to have the new pedestrian bridge open sometime before Thanksgiving.
The new bridge was built next to the one already in place across ISB and both are expected to be heavily used during big events at Daytona International Speedway as well as when the One Daytona project finally breaks ground.
The bridge is part of a $17 million FDOT project designed to make that stretch of ISB safer for pedestrians to use.
Other features of that project which are expected to be in place by next year’s Daytona 500 include creating sidewalks which comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards as well as various improvements to intersections, lights and landscaping between Williamson Boulevard and Midway Avenue.
