Flagler Beach, FL – A whole lot of pirates are invading Flagler Beach this weekend.
Members of the “Ye Privateers of Palm Coast”, the “Swashbucklers of St. Augustine” and other such groups are taking to the sand on Saturday to help support autistic kids as they learn how to surf.
It’s all part of the 6th annual First Coast Beach Festival hosted by Surfers for Autism, which will take place starting at 9am near the Flagler Beach Pier.
Pat Block – a spokeswoman for Ye Privateers – says the group will also be roaming around Veterans’ Park telling stories and playing games as they cheer the kids on.
“[We are] a group of people just looking to pillage and party and plunder for charities,” Block added.
Ye Privateers plan to donate $600 to Surfers for Autism as part of Saturday’s event. The money comes from the proceeds of a pirate fashion show hosted on Monday at Chez Jacqueline in Palm Coast.
Surfers For Autism is dedicated to teaching autistic kids how to surf in the hopes of helping them grow and develop. The non-profit group also advocates for autism issues and scientific research.
2 to 4 SFA instructors work with each autistic child as they’re put on surf boards and head out into the surf, part of a whole host of activities the kids will get to experience that day. Some of those include paddleboarding and kayaking.
Block says a large reason why Ye Privateers – a newly formed pirate group – will be heading out on Saturday is because the Swashbucklers really stole the show during last year’s event.
“Many of the children gave us hugs that have never even hugged their relatives and friends,” Block added. “They’re just an amazing group of individuals working with these kids.”
The events at Veterans’ Park are open to the public, but only those who are registered can participate in the surf portion.
