Port Orange, FL-A recorded phone message went out this morning to parents of students at Silver Sands Middle School in Port Orange after what was first reported as the attempted abduction of a female student on her way to school around 8 AM. Deputies have taken a suspect into custody. He’s identified as 31-year-old Jayzel Hendrieth. VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson says he’s been charged with one count of child abuse.
Deputies then said they thought the girl was assaulted by a relative of someone she had a previous altercation or argument with, but now don’t think that was the case. Investigators think it was not an attempted abduction, but don’t have a motive for the incident and say the two don’t know each other.
The girl was reportedly ok according to the message from Principal Rose Roland. Volusia County Schools spokeswoman Nancy Wait said the girl was with her parents and was not hurt. She was grabbed by the black man after being dropped off across the street and crossing to the school. He reportedly crossed the street behind her. A school maintenance man saw what was happening, yelled at the man and scared him off. The suspect took off on foot.
Wait said the principal’s messaged asked parents to have a discussion with their student about immediately reporting any strange behavior by adults as they make their way to school.
