Daytona Beach, FL – Florida’s longest serving United States Senator is coming to Daytona Beach.
Democrat Bill Nelson will give a speech on Wednesday at Daytona Beach’s Ocean Center as part of the Washington Speaker Series from the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Jim Cameron – the Senior Vice-President for Government Relations at the DRCC – says Nelson will address a variety of topics during the speech. Among those topics are health care expansion, the space industry and cleaning up Central Florida’s waterways.
Nelson is expected to focus on how those topics could impact Volusia County, especially as it relates to the proposed spaceport at the Volusia-Brevard line and Mosquito Lagoon’s ongoing water quality issues.
Chamber officials have also asked Nelson to talk about the Low Income Pool fund, one of the main sticking points in Florida’s ongoing debate about health care, especially during the last Florida Legislature session.
Nelson’s speech is part of a luncheon starting at 11:30am and ending around 1pm. The cost is $25 for Chamber members with advance reservation 24 hours prior to the event or $30 at the door. For non-members, it’ll be $40.
Around 130 people are expected to attend Nelson’s speech, per Cameron.
Nelson – a former astronaut – was a former Congressman representing Central Florida and also Florida’s first Insurance Commissioner before his election to the United States Senate.
Currently, Nelson serves on several Senate committees, including for Commerce, Science & Transportation, Armed Services, Finance and Aging.
Nelson recently returned to work after undergoing cancer treatment.
