Ormond Beach, FL – A 90-year-old man is arrested in Ormond Beach for driving the wrong way on US 1 while drunk.

Donald T. Wilson – a retired Daytona Beach resident – was taken into custody around 9:15pm Monday near the Kenilworth Avenue intersection.

According to the arrest report, a Daytona Beach Police Department officer was going north on US 1 when he spotted a white van – reportedly driven by Wilson – coming right at him as it drove south in the northbound lanes.

The Ormond Beach Police Department says officers were sent to the scene soon after the DBPD officer – who was in an unmarked car – managed to stop the van.

Per the report, OBPD found the van left in reverse as it faced southbound in the inside northbound lane, with Wilson sitting in the driver’s seat smelling of alcohol.

The report noted that one of the officers put the van in park after Wilson was asked to do so and didn’t. It also noted that Wilson was unsteady on his feet when he stepped out of the van and that he had dilated pupils, glassy eyes and slurred speech.

Wilson claimed he had drunk 3 glasses of red wine at 2 restaurants and was on his way home when he was pulled over.

Wilson was arrested after he failed field sobriety exercises and blew a .140 on the Breathalyzer after initially refusing to do so, per the report. That result is above the legal limit for blood alcohol content.

OBPD Officer Keith Walker noted that Wilson was ordered to take out his false teeth prior to taking the Breathalyzer because the test results wouldn’t have been legal had they been left inside.

The report also noted that OBPD had to re-test Wilson on the Breathalyzer after a power outage at OBPD headquarters left officers unable to print the results of the first test. The results of the second test – done around an hour after the first – came back with a blood alcohol content of .115, which is also over the legal limit.

Officers say Wilson kept telling them that he was a 90-year-old man who “didn’t kill anyone” and that he just wanted to go home.

Wilson left Volusia County Jail after posting $500 bond on a driving under the influence charge.
