South Daytona, FL-A group of local firefighters are remembering September 11th in a unique way. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will begin at 8:46am, the exact time the first plane hit the World Trade Center on that fateful day. It’ll take place at the Peck Plaza on State Road A1A in Daytona Beach Shores. Scott Hughes – a City of South Daytona firefighter participating in the event – says he expects this event to be physically tougher than running a 5K race in full firefighter gear.
The firefighters and other members of the public are invited to climb the stairs at Peck Plaza – which is 29 stories tall – until they’ve climbed 110 stories, the exact number of stories at the World Trade Center. To reach that number, the group will walk all the way to the top, walk all the way to the ground floor and do it all over again, a feat that will see the group go up and down the entire building height at least 3 times.
Hughes and other firefighters will do all that in full firefighter gear complete with an air pack, which weighs around 80 pounds. Hughes says he does it in honor of “one of the most heroic rescue efforts ever taken on” and that a small prayer will be done just before the climb begins. Walkers will carry photos of the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11.
