The Daytona Beach Police Department released security video Monday afternoon of the break-in at the Family Dollar store at 715 Mason Avenue, less than 12 hours after it actually happened.
DBPD Sergeant John Creamer says 2 people – 1 of which was definitely a man – went in through the closed front doors around 4:15am Monday.
“The two subjects used a crowbar to enter the business and then removed the ATM,” Creamer added.
The video shows the suspects mostly covered from head to toe in dark clothing as they entered the store, unplugged the ATM and dragged it through the front door.
From there, police think the suspects loaded the ATM into a silver pick-up truck stolen from a nearby home on Derbyshire Road and drove away.
Creamer says it’s likely that the suspects had cased out the store prior to the break-in due to how quickly they were able to get in and out of the store.
Investigators also think these suspects may have done similar ATM thefts recently in Volusia and Flagler counties.
“This happens periodically,” Creamer added. “We’ll do 6 or 8 months and we’re quiet and, all of a sudden, these [robberies] pop up.”
Besides the ATM and the suspects, DBPD is also trying to find the truck. It’s a 2002 silver-colored Dodge Ram with a Texas tag of M6C6DV.
Creamer says DBPD has a few leads on the suspects and have a “pretty good idea” who they are but don’t have an identity they can release to the public at this point.
The shorter of the 2 suspects may be a juvenile or a woman while the taller suspect is definitely an African-American man, per Creamer.
