Daytona Beach, FL – A motorcyclist is in critical condition after troopers say he rear-ended a sport utility vehicle on US 92.

That motorcyclist – yet to be identified by the Florida Highway Patrol – went to Halifax Health Medical Center as a trauma alert following an accident that closed all of US 92/International Speedway Boulevard near Old DeLand Road around 4:30pm Monday.

FHP Sergeant Kim Montes says the motorcyclist is a 37-year-old DeLand resident who was heading west on a 2010 Honda when he tried to merge from the right lane into the left lane, rear-ending a 2003 GMC SUV driven by 27-year-old Aaron Friedrich of Illinois.

“Traffic was slow in the area due to a previous crash,” Montes added. “This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.”

Troopers say the accident doesn’t appear to be alcohol related and that Friedrich had his seat belt on while the motorcyclist had his helmet on.

Friedrich wasn’t hurt, per the FHP accident report.

The roadway was shut down briefly so Air One – the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office helicopter – could land, according to scanner traffic. One lane has since re-opened as of 6:30pm Monday.
