Daytona Beach, FL – A New Smyrna Beach man gets 10 years in prison for being drunk when he hit and killed a tourist and mother of 7 with a vehicle on the beach last year.
Shawn Patrick Doolan was facing 15 years in prison prior to Friday’s sentencing hearing in a Volusia County courtroom.
The 37-year-old entered a no contest plea in court last July for DUI manslaughter in the June 2014 death of 45-year-old Elizabeth Braly of North Carolina.
Braly – a Hendersonville resident who was on vacation in Daytona Beach Shores with her family – died soon after Doolan’s vehicle hit her near the Dunlawton Avenue beach ramp in Daytona Beach Shores on the evening of June 24, 2014.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Doolan was heading east on Dunlawton in a 2002 Nissan 4-door vehicle when he drove past the A1A intersection and through the closed beach ramp gates, hitting the toll booth in the process.
From there, witnesses told 911 that Doolan’s vehicle kept going on the beach and hit the 45-year-old Braly as she was walking on the sand that Tuesday evening.
Volusia County officials say they received over 20 911 calls that night about the incident. Prosecutors played those calls in court and video of the accident after Doolan took the stand and apologized to Braly’s family for what happened.
