New Smyrna Beach, FL-Firefighters spent some time last week installing smoke detectors in sixty homes in the Quail Hollow Subdivision in New Smyrna Beach. The effort is part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

The installation also used volunteer help.

“If we are able to save one life by installing a working smoke detector, we have met our goal,” said New Smyrna Beach Fire Chief Greg Anglin. “Joining efforts with the American Red Cross is a win-win for the community.” Firefighters again will assist the American Red Cross October 24 as crews canvass the Historic Westside community of New Smyrna Beach. Crews will offer fire alarm installation in the area of Washington Street and Mary Avenue. “New Smyrna Beach residents have been happy to see us and are very receptive to the effort we all make,” said Jim Lintz, American Red Cross representative and the lead for the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

According to the American Red Cross, every day seven people die and 36 people suffer injuries in home fires. More than $7 billion in property damage occurs each year from home fires.
