Edgewater, FL – No injuries are reported after part of a small plane’s landing gear wouldn’t come down while its pilots tried to land in Edgewater.
The Edgewater Fire Department was on scene and waiting as that twin-engine Piper Seneca touched down at Massey Ranch Air Park around 5pm Thursday.
EFD Captain Jill Danigel says the 2 pilots were able to circle around the airfield until first responders were able to set up and get ready for whatever happened.
“Our fire apparatus staged adjacent to the runway,” Danigel added. “The aircraft was able to land successfully although their nose gear never engaged.”
The rear wheels were able to lock in place and that’s how the plane touched down, but with the front landing gear not in place, the plane ended up nose-down to the ground and drifted slightly off the runway before coming to a stop.
No fuel leak or fire was reported and Danigel says EFD was in position to deal with either situation if that had happened.
“Whoever was responsible for the aircraft called 911 and gave us [a] heads-up that they had been circling the airport and wanted us to know before they landed,” Danigel stated.
There was some minor damage to the plane, primarily when it went nose-down to the ground. No passengers were on board at the time.
The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating why the front landing gear didn’t open, according to Danigel.
