Daytona Beach, FL – A homeless man is locked up after police say he assaulted another man in public for no apparent reason.
29-year-old William J. Thompson of Daytona Beach was arrested around 8:45pm Tuesday after officers found him covered in blood on the 200 block of North Palmetto Avenue, according to his arrest report.
The Daytona Beach Police Department says it all started around 15 minutes earlier on the 300 block of Mullally Street.
A 57-year-old witness claims she saw Thompson jump on top of a 34-year-old Palm Coast man and beat him up with his fists and feet as the victim lay with his back to the ground.
The report shows the victim had a broken nose, swollen eyes and possibly a broken jaw. He was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment after identifying Thompson as his attacker.
When questioned, the victim claimed Thompson just came up to him and beat him up for no reason, per the report.
Thompson told DBPD he was covered in blood because a group of people had just beat him up, according to the report.
As of 7pm Wednesday, Thompson is held on $20,000 bond at Volusia County Jail on a felony aggravated battery charge.
Thompson’s address in the arrest report was listed as the homeless shelter on North Street.
