Port Orange, FL – The city-owned golf course in Port Orange is re-opening for business this weekend.
Over 6 months and nearly $750,000 later, the city will hold a ribbon-cutting Friday afternoon at Cypress Head Golf Course.
Port Orange spokesman Kent Donahue says the public is invited to attend the event, which starts at 2pm and features a 21-golf club salute as well as a 9-hole golf scramble.
“On-line registration is required for the golf scramble,” Donahue added. “Space is limited.”
The golf course was closed in May so that the city could update the greens and bunkers as well as re-do some of the tee boxes.
“The greens were taken down about 8 inches and then shaped back to their original size,” Donahue noted. “The new turf mix installed was a Jones Dwarf variety of Bermuda.”
The renovation was done under the guidance of Mike Dasher of Dasher Golf Designs, the original course designer.
Around $440,000 was spent on the new greens, with and another $100,000 for the bunker renovations and over $40,000 on the tee boxes.
The city also spent nearly $70,000 to fix flooding issues with the driving range.
City Council members decided against remaking the short game area earlier this year because they wanted to see where the clubhouse renovation would go before deciding what to do with it.
A report released last year by the United States Golf Association pushed city officials to renovate Cypress Head, especially since the greens first installed when the course opened were still in place.
This is the first major renovation for Cypress Head since it opened as a municipal golf course in 1992.
Upgrades were also made to the Tavern Restaurant and the clubhouse banquet area.
