Daytona Beach, FL – One of the biggest parts of Daytona Rising has finally arrived at Daytona International Speedway.
On Thursday, the Speedway received all the components of a massive identification sign, parts of which could be placed on the outside of the grandstands starting Friday.
The sign – which will read “Daytona International Speedway” once it’s complete – will be easily visible to anyone driving along West International Speedway Boulevard, according to DIS spokesman Andrew Booth.
“The ‘supersign’ will be located near the new center entrance, welcoming race fans and guests to the World Center of Racing,” Booth added.
This sign – made up entirely of LED-lit letters – replaces the iconic entrance sign near Fentress Boulevard which was knocked down in July, but it won’t be on the same spot as the old sign.
Instead, the new sign will hang on the newly renovated grandstands near Fentress and be lit up at night so that the sign is visible at all times, per Booth.
“The ‘DAYTONA’ text measures 13 feet 6 inches tall and the ‘INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY’ text is more than 12 feet tall,” Booth noted. “The entire length of the sign measures 355 feet.”
Wisconsin-based Jones Sign Company created the sign and transported it to Daytona Beach via 2 large semi trucks, traveling nearly 1,500 miles across 6 states in the process.
DIS sent out constant travel updates on its Twitter feed about the sign since it left Green Bay on Monday.
The installation of the sign should be finished sometime in December, according to DIS.
The $400 million renovation of the Speedway is expected to be done by the Rolex 24 race in January, around a month before the Daytona 500.
