Daytona Beach, FL – One of the last remaining icons of the old Daytona International Speedway is coming down.
The large DIS sign that’s been at the corner of International Speedway Boulevard and Fentress Boulevard since 1994 will be removed Thursday morning.
DIS spokesman Andrew Booth says the sign – which stands 57 feet tall and 48 feet wide – will be replaced with something “bigger, better and bolder”, though he wouldn’t go into details as to what that actually means.
“The demolition will take place over the course of a couple of hours,” Booth added.
A large excavator will be tearing the sign down piece by piece starting at 8am Thursday, according to Booth.
The sign is being replaced as part of Daytona Rising, the $400 million overhaul of the historic motorsports facility.
DIS expects all the renovations to be finished before next year’s Daytona 500.
