South Daytona, FL – Investigators are trying to find and arrest a South Daytona man after he jumped onto the hood of a marked police car, causing a large dent in the hood.
The South Daytona Police Department says it happened last May 29th at an apartment complex on the 2100 block of South Palmetto Avenue after police had left the vehicle there unoccupied as a crime deterrent.
Video of the suspect jumping onto the 2009 Chevrolet Impala – since identified by police as 20-year-old Jose Marquez – was discovered on social media by an officer on November 16th, according to SDPD Lieutenant Dan Dietrich. That video is posted above this article.
A Volusia County Judge signed an arrest warrant for Marquez the following day charging him with felony criminal mischief. He would have to post a $10,000 bond at Volusia County Jail once he’s taken into custody.
SDPD says the video was posted under Marquez’s Facebook account and that officers recognized him from prior encounters because he’s known to be part of a gang.
The video’s original title read “Put it in the coffin [expletive] the cops,” according to the charging affidavit.
The report noted that “put ‘em in the coffin” is a video fad where people throw themselves onto surfaces with their arms crossed over their chest.
Marquez’s last known address was an apartment on South Palmetto Avenue but SDPD says he no longer lives there.
The dent will cost around $1,200 to fix and was initially discovered in July, according to an SDPD memo.
Anyone with information on Marquez is asked to call SDPD at 386-322-3030 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-8477 to remain anonymous and possibly qualify for a cash reward.
