Deltona, FL – A 27-year-old Deltona man spends his Thanksgiving behind bars for robbing a convenience store after trying to rob a fast food restaurant.

Brian McCoy turned himself in to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office around 2:30 AM Thanksgiving Day at a grocery store parking lot in Sanford, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson says McCoy is being held without bond at Seminole County Jail on one count of robbery and one count of attempted robbery.

“The mini-crime spree began shortly before 10:30 PM at a Burger King on Sunrise Boulevard in DeBary,” Davidson said. “That’s where a motorist rolled up to the drive-thru lane and ordered 2 cheeseburgers and some fries.”

But when that motorist – later identified as McCoy by VCSO – got to the pickup window, he told the cashier to hand over the money from the cash register, per Davidson.

“The robbery attempt was quickly and easily foiled when the restaurant manager working the drive-thru window refused the man’s demands and closed the window,” Davidson added. “The suspect then drove off headed eastbound on Dirksen Drive towards Deltona.”

Deputies searching the area for the suspect received word about 10 minutes later of an ongoing robbery on Deltona Boulevard, about 1.5 miles from the Burger King.

“A man fitting the same description robbed a Circle K store in Deltona,” Davidson stated. “This time, the suspect managed to get away with some money, but he also was recognized by one of the store clerks.”

That clerk told VCSO he thought McCoy was joking at first when he came to the counter with a pack of beer, but then realized McCoy was serious when he said that he was “sorry to do this on Thanksgiving,” according to Davidson.

“When another customer came up behind the suspect, he motioned for her to go in front of him,” Davidson noted. “After the customer completed her transaction, the suspect then continued with the robbery. The clerk said she was fearful for her safety and said the suspect looked like he was high on drugs.”

VCSO reached McCoy – who left the store with less than $100 in cash and the beer – on the phone soon after he left the store and that’s when he offered to turn himself in, per Davidson.

McCoy is scheduled for first appearance in front of the judge on Friday morning.
