Palm Coast, FL – A Flagler County middle school student is OK after he was hit by a vehicle while heading home from school.
The 8th grader was riding a bicycle from Indian Trails Middle School when the accident happened at 1:35 PM Tuesday.
Flagler County Schools spokesman Jason Wheeler says the boy was heading north on the sidewalk along Belle Terre Parkway when he crossed in front of a school exit.
“The driver of the vehicle ran into the 13-year-old while he was in the crosswalk,” Wheeler added. “The driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.”
Paramedics treated the boy on scene for scrapes and bruises to his legs and then took him to Florida Hospital Flagler as a precautionary measure, according to Wheeler.
“He has since been released,” Wheeler noted.
This kind of incident is why Wheeler says drivers and students have to pay close attention while on the road, especially near school zones and bus stops when school is starting and ending for the day.
“Bike riders also need to wear helmets at all times,” Wheeler stated. “If they are unable to purchase a helmet, school administrators can make arrangements to get a helmet to any student in need of one.”
