New Smyrna Beach, FL – A New Smyrna Beach fishing pier destroyed by storms over 10 years ago is going to be rebuilt.
During its meeting on Thursday, the Volusia County Council unanimously approved $391,000 to create a new fishing pier at Smyrna Dunes Park that could be ready for use by fall of 2016.
County officials say the pier will be built in 18-foot deep water near the United States Coast Guard Station Ponce De Leon Inlet and should be a great spot to catch all kinds of fish, including snook, flounder, sea trout, redfish and mangrove snapper.
The pier itself will extend up to 90 feet offshore from the dog-friendly beach and be built 10 feet wide and 350 feet long, keeping intact the bathing area that’s currently used by dog and their owners.
Joe Nolin with the Volusia County Coastal Division told the VCC the pier will be built using concrete pylons and a conventional lumber frame with plastic lumber decking and handrails, similar to the pier at the Wilbur Boathouse.
The plans also call for the new pier to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards for handicap accessibility and be connected to the park’s boardwalk system.
The county hopes to start the bid process early next and award a construction contract in time to get the pier built by September 2016.
$119,475 of the money is coming via a Florida Inland Navigation District grant, with the county chipping in on the rest.
Nolin also noted at the meeting that other parts of the park will be renovated over the next 2 years, including a widening of the current boardwalk from 5 feet to 8 feet and the expansion of parking lots.
