DeLand, FL – A DeLand man is in custody after police say he tried to walk out of a Walmart without paying for a video game system.
25-year-old Ian C. Rosean was arrested around 7 AM Sunday at a property on Old Daytona Road in DeLand after fleeing on foot from the Walmart on 1699 North Woodland Boulevard, according to the DeLand Police Department.
In a 911 call, Walmart workers say a man was spotted leaving the store without paying $299 for a Microsoft Xbox and he got into a shouting match with them when confronted in the parking lot.
According to the arrest report, that man – dressed in a black top and blue jeans – dropped the Xbox in the parking lot and ran away.
It was a few minutes after that when officers say a resident of that Old Daytona Road home called 911 to say a man – later identified as Rosean – was banging on the front and back doors of the home as if trying to break in.
Police came to the home and arrested Rosean after he was identified by Walmart loss prevention as the man who tried to run off with the Xbox.
When questioned, Rosean gave officers a false name and told DeLand PD after they found out his real name that he did it because he was scared and didn’t want to spend the holidays in jail, per the report.
The report also noted that Rosean cursed at police, claimed officers had “got out with him” because he’s black and that he took the Xbox because he was having “financial hardship”.
Officers say Rosean kept resisting officers by repeatedly trying to place his handcuffed arms in front of him instead of behind his back.
Rosean also claimed that he had a friend who lived at the Old Daytona Road home but the resident who called 911 told police said he didn’t know who Rosean was.
As of 3:30 PM Tuesday, Rosean is held on $6,000 bond at Volusia County Jail on 1 count each of petit theft, loitering & prowling, resisting and officer and giving a false name upon arrest.
Rosean was also wanted for 2 counts of retail theft and grand theft in an unrelated case, per DeLand PD.
