Port Orange, FL – The Port Orange Police Department is looking for a new leader.
POPD Chief Gerald Monahan Jr. is retiring in November after 16 years with the law enforcement agency, according to a press release sent Monday evening by the City of Port Orange.

City spokesman Kent Donahue says the goal is to hire Monahan’s replacement with enough time for the new hire to work with Monahan during a transition period.
“Port Orange is one of the safest community in the State of Florida for a population our size,” Donahue added. “We want to continue that tradition.”
Internal and external candidates are being considered, per Donahue.
The position oversees a nearly $12 million budget for the law enforcement agency, some of which goes to the 91 sworn officers, 3 sworn reserve officers, 17 non-sworn employees and over 40 volunteers who provide law enforcement and animal control services throughout Port Orange.
The Police Chief is also responsible for the city’s criminal investigation, administration and patrol divisions and reports directly to the City Manager.
According to the city’s website, the full-time position with benefits pays between $100,000 to $122,998 annually.
Besides serving as POPD Chief, Monahan was briefly in charge of the city’s Fire Department before the city decided to hire a separate Fire Chief in November 2013.
Monahan was sworn in as POPD Chief in August 1999 after 29 years at the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania, including a stint as its Police Chief.
