DeLand, FL – Troopers are investigating a fatal crash in the Interstate 4 construction zone that shut down part of the highway for hours during the afternoon commute.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 3:20pm Monday at Mile Marker 123. That’s between the exits at State Road 44 in DeLand and US 92 in Daytona Beach.

FHP Sergeant Kim Montes says a 55-year-old man from Auburndale is the victim. He’s identified as Bradley Bultman.

“The crash involves a semi that struck a guardrail and overturned,” Montes added.” The driver was pronounced deceased on scene. No other vehicles are involved.”

Eastbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at State Road 44 soon after the accident and it’s still that way as of 6pm Monday.

A storm front was moving through the area at the time of the accident, but troopers haven’t said if the rain was a factor.

Montes did say that the driver apparently lost control of the semi and hit the center wall, at which point the semi got onto the right shoulder and overturned when it hit the guardrail.

Troopers don’t believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, but an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

The FHP report also noted that the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
