Deltona, FL – 3 teenagers face felony charges after they allegedly worked together to shove an 11-year-old girl off a hoverboard so they could steal it.
Those teenagers – a 16-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy – are charged with robbery and grand theft in an incident that took place around 4 PM Tuesday near the intersection of Lydia Drive and Saxon Boulevard in Deltona.
The 2 boys are University High School students, according to a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office incident report. It’s unclear what school the girl attends. Due to their ages, WNDB News is not identifying them.
A deputy responded to the scene and discovered that the girl was riding a Smart Balance Wheel hoverboard along with a friend when a silver Honda driven by a female with curly red hair and glasses approached them.
According to the arrest report, someone in the back seat of the Honda – described only as a white male – asked if he could ride the $500 hoverboard and the girl told him “no” before running back to her home with her friend.
The girl and her friend – a 10-year-old girl – left her home later on in the day to rid the hoverboard again and that’s when they ran into the same silver Honda near the intersection of Azora Drive and Baton Drive.
This time around, deputies say the driver parked the Honda and the 16-year-old boy got out. That’s when he allegedly pushed the girl off the hoverboard, grabbed it and ran back to the car.
The girl told VCSO she punched the suspect several times in the back and pushed his head into the vehicle at one point before he managed to get back inside, at which point the driver took off.
According to the report, one of the girl’s big toes was injured after it was run over by one of the Honda’s wheels as it fled the scene. She refused medical treatment, per VCSO.
A sergeant searching the area afterward found a silver 2003 4-door Honda parked at a home on Ferendina Drive. That’s also where the 3 teenagers were located and all were arrested after the girl positively identified them.
Deputies did not find the hoverboard.
