Ormond Beach, FL – One of Volusia County’s 3 drawbridges over the Intracoastal Waterway is closed to traffic until further notice.

The LB Knox Bridge in Ormond Beach – also known as High Bridge – was shut down on Saturday due to an instrumentation failure, according to Volusia County spokeswoman Pat Kuehn.

“Crews from Volusia County’s Road and Bridge Division have left the bridge in the open position to allow for the passage of boats,” Kuehn added. “A well-marked detour is in place.”

A technician has been dispatched to figure out what went wrong, per Kuehn.

The county has not released any other details at this time.

This is the first time the bridge has closed to traffic since a power surge left the drawbridge unable to open for boats last June.

High Bridge – part of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail – was built in 1955 and is one of 54 bridges maintained by Volusia County. About 1,100 vehicles cross the bridge each day, according to the county.

That bridge – along with its cousins on Main Street and Orange Avenue in Daytona Beach – have had various shutdowns over the years due to age and a lack of parts to fix the bridge in a timely fashion.

A high-rise bridge is in the works to replace the Orange Avenue drawbridge with a high-rise bridge similar to the one at International Speedway Boulevard. No replacements are planned at this time for Main Street’s drawbridge or High Bridge.
