Daytona Beach, FL – A Daytona Beach woman is out on bond after a neighbor caught her on video beating her puppy and keeping it locked in a crate outside during a cold night.
19-year-old Tamia S. James was arrested around 9 PM Monday at her Seabreeze Boulevard apartment by the Daytona Beach Police Department. She’s since left Volusia County Jail after posting $1,500 on charges of animal cruelty and resisting an officer.
Officers were called to the Overlook apartments near the eastern foot of the Seabreeze Bridge by a neighbor who says she’s been hearing a dog bark on the back patio of James’ apartment every day since Saturday.
That woman – who lives in the building across the street from James’ apartment – told DBPD she was working from home when she heard the dog crying from its crate on the back porch and saw James let the dog inside before beating it with what she thought was a belt.
It was around 45 minutes later when the woman claims she heard the dog cry again from the back porch and this time, she used a video camera to record James hitting the dog several times before sticking it back in its crate.
Officers went to James’ apartment after reviewing the video footage and she admitted to using a leash with a hard plastic piece at the end to “spank” her dog – believed to be a pitbull that’s around 6 months old – because it was chewing up dog toys.
James also admitted to keeping the dog in a crate on the back porch on a night where temperatures were in the 40’s and that she would’ve spanked the dog again after it urinated on the carpet while the officers were in her apartment.
The report also notes that James tried to pull away from the officer and push her dog into the apartment after the officer had secured the dog with its collar and was trying to place James in handcuffs.
The dog had no visible injuries and was taken to the Halifax Humane Society. Shelter officials say the dog doesn’t have a name and still needs to be checked out by a veterinarian.
The video and photos of the dog were taken by DBPD as evidence. They have not been released.
