New Smyrna Beach, FL – A New Smyrna Beach man is out on bond from Volusia County Jail as officers investigate a fatal hit & run wreck that they think he may have been involved in.
27-year-old Jonathan Gibson was booked on a driving under the influence charge early Friday morning, hours after the New Smyrna Beach Police Department responded to the crash scene on the 2400 block of State Road 44. That’s just east of where Interstate 95 meets SR 44.
NSBPD Lieutenant Shane Riggle says 50-year-old Kevin Meck – listed in the report as a homeless man – was on the north shoulder of the SR 44 westbound lanes when the accident happened around 7:30 PM Thursday.
“While riding his bicycle, he was struck from behind and killed by a dark-colored pickup truck,” Riggle added. “According to witnesses, the driver of the truck stopped briefly and then left the scene, continuing west on SR 44.”
As officers were processing the accident scene, NSBPD got a call about a truck that had stopped on the 300 Block of North Airport Road and that’s where Gibson was found, per Riggle.
“The caller stated the truck appeared to have been involved in a crash and the driver was outside staggering around,” Riggle stated. “Officers responded to the area and observed a Chevy pick-up truck having damage consistent with the traffic homicide on SR 44.”
Gibson was arrested at the scene for DUI as his vehicle – a 2007 4-door dark blue Chevy truck – was seized as evidence. Other charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call NSBPD Investigator Kirkland at 386-404-7735 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
