Daytona Beach, FL - Hundreds of people gathered across Volusia County on Monday in honor of the slain leader of the civil rights movement.

Street marches were held in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and DeLand on the 30th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

Nearly 300 were on hand at the Allen Chapel AME Church in Daytona Beach and hundreds more gathered for an MLK Day breakfast at Stetson University in DeLand followed by a march that briefly closed Woodland Boulevard.

Another large group gathered for a breakfast at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in New Smyrna Beach before marching to a memorial service at Old Fort Park.

King was best known for organizing nonviolent protests against segregation in the South during the 1950’s and 1960’s, including in Florida. Those protests eventually led to the establishment of the Civil Rights Act and the end of segregation.
