Deltona, FL – A former Deltona city commissioner hopes to replace another who’s leaving Tallahassee for a shot at Capitol Hill.
55-year-old Zenaida Denizac – who lost in 2014 against John Masiarczyk in the Deltona mayor’s race – has filed to run for the District 27 Florida House seat being vacated by fellow Republican David Santiago.
District 27 covers the southern half of Volusia, including DeBary, Deltona, Orange City, Lake Helen, Edgewater and Oak Hill.
The Puerto Rico native used to be Deltona’s vice-mayor and is a Spanish teacher at Deltona’s Pine Ridge High School.
Denizac’s only declared opponent at this time is Donald Mair, a 45-year-old DeBary activist who pushed for the passage of “Gabby’s Law” after his 12-year-old daughter – whose name was Gabby – died in an accident while walking home from her school bus in 2012. He’s running as an independent.
Santiago – also a former Deltona city commissioner – announced last week that he’s running against current state House representatives Fred Costello (District 25) and Dwayne Taylor (District 26) for the United States House District 6 seat currently held by Ron DeSantis.
Current Volusia County Council member Deb Denys has filed to run for Costello’s seat. The Republican is currently the only official candidate for the former Ormond Beach mayor’s spot in the state House.
3 candidates have filed for Taylor’s seat. They include Republican Michael Cantu of Daytona Beach and Democrats Patrick J. Henry and Steven W. Miller, both of Daytona Beach. Henry is the current Zone 5 representative on the Daytona Beach City Commission.
Costello is leaving his seat in Tallahassee after winning election to replace Dave Hood – another former Ormond Beach mayor – in 2014. Taylor – a former Daytona Beach commissioner – cannot run again for District 26 due to term limits.
DeSantis – a Republican – is giving up his seat to go for the US Senate seat Marco Rubio is giving up as part of his White House run.
