DeLeon Springs, FL – A series of prescribed burns in the Volusia & Flagler county areas left smoke trails that could be seen for miles on Thursday.

The biggest of those came near US 17 in DeLeon Spring after the United States Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast Region Fire Management Division put the torch to over 3,600 acres at the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Preserve.

The operation burned marsh grass near Jones Island after a helicopter was used to set the fire intentionally, according to USFWS officials.

Another fire was set on nearly 2,500 acres of conservation land near Lake George State Forest, according to the Florida Forest Service.

Smaller fires were also lit in a 100-acre area west of Lake Disston and a 50-acre area around the “Cody’s Corner” region between State Road 11 and County Road 304.

The Florida Highway Patrol expects smoke from the Cody’s Corner fire to potentially cause visibility issues for drivers during the night and into Friday morning.
