Port Orange, FL – A Port Orange father and his son are behind bars after deputies think they worked together to steal around $300 in Florida Lottery scratch-off tickets.

54-year-old Robert D. Carbonell and 28-year-old Robert D. Carbonell Jr. were arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office around 3:30 PM Saturday at a home near Daytona Beach.

As of 3 PM Monday, the elder Carbonell is held on $19,000 bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of felony retail theft, grand theft auto and introducing contraband into a detention facility. The younger is held without bond at VC on charges of felony retail theft and grand theft.

It all started around 7:30 PM on January 18th at the Circle K convenience store on 1800 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach, according to the arrest report.

Deputies think the elder Carbonell struck up a conversation with the store clerk and distracted him long enough for his son to reach across the counter and take 15 Lucky & Gold Rush lottery tickets. The theft was reported by store officials the following day after reviewing the security video footage, per VCSO.

It was 4 days after the theft when the elder Carbonell returned to the store to cash in $90 worth of winning lottery tickets, which VCSO says were among the ones stolen by his son.

With the held of the South Daytona Police Department, VCSO managed to track the Carbonells to a home on June Terrace last Saturday, taking them both into custody.

The elder Carbonell refused to speak to deputies when questioned, but did tell one deputy that they “did all this work for some stupid lottery tickets,” according to the arrest report.

The younger Carbonell did speak to deputies after he was Mirandized, but his statement was redacted from the arrest report.
