Ormond Beach, FL – At least 2 homes have been evacuated near the Volusia-Flagler line due to a brush fire.
That fire – which was found Wednesday afternoon along Eagle Rock Road and Winchester Road near Ormond Beach – is also causing visibility issues along US 1.
Flagler County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Julie Murphy says the fire is near the Eagle Rock gated community, just north of the Volusia line.
“The fire started shortly after 4pm and is currently a little more than 3 acres,” Murphy added. “The Florida Forest Service is helping Flagler County firefighters contain the fire.”
Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said the 2 homes had to be evacuated because the flames got close to those homes.
“There is very low visibility,” Petito added. “If the smoke gets worse, we’ll ask for the roadway to be closed.”
Drivers are warned to avoid US 1 in that area if possible.
Workers with Flagler’s Emergency Management and Road & Bridge divisions as well as the Florida Department of Transportation have placed warning signs along US 1 just north and south of the fire location, per Murphy.
Authorities are advising that the brush fire smoke impacting US 1 could continue to be an issue overnight and into Thursday morning, especially with patchy fog also in the forecast for around sunrise Thursday.
No injuries have been reported at this time and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, according to Murphy.
