New Smyrna Beach, FL – US 1 southbound in New Smyrna Beach will be closed for some time after a motorcycle rider suffers a severe head injury in an accident with a truck.
The New Smyrna Beach Police Department says it happened around 4 PM Monday at the South Street intersection.
NSBPD Lieutenant Shane Riggle says the rider of a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle was heading south on US 1 approaching South Street when the driver of a 2004 Toyota pickup pulled in front of the motorcycle as it tried to turn north on US 1 from South Street.
“[That caused] the motorcyclist to hit him in the right front fender,” Riggle added. “The motorcyclist was ejected and lost his helmet. The motorcyclist suffered a head injury and was transported to Halifax Hospital in serious condition.”
The driver of the Toyota – a 60-year-old Edgewater man – wasn’t hurt, per Riggle.
“Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time,” Riggle noted. “The investigation is currently on-going.”
The motorcyclist hasn’t been identified at this time but Riggle did say the victim is a 44-year-old man from Palm Coast.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call NSBPD Sergeant Mark Severance at 386-424-2220.
