Daytona Beach Shores, FL – Be extra careful if you’re driving along State Road A1A in Daytona Beach Shores for the next 2 months or so.
The Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety announced on Monday that it’s entering the warning phase of an ongoing operation targeting unsafe drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians on the beachside.
That operation – funded by a Florida Department of Transportation grant through the University of South Florida – began last October with officers pulling over any violators they see and educating them about the traffic laws in that area instead of giving them a ticket.
The education part of the operation is now over, meaning that any officers who spot violations will have to give out warnings between February and March. Any “egregious violators” will get citations, according to DBS Police Sergeant Mike Fowler.
“During previous operations, officers repeatedly observed drivers fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, occasionally requiring pedestrians to run to avoid being struck,” Fowler added. “Florida law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.”
Police urge pedestrians to use marked crosswalks whenever possible to increase the chances of not being hit by a vehicle.
This operation targets the entire length of A1A in the Shores, which is by far the busiest road for traffic within the city limits.
Fowler says this is identical to what the department did in the summer of 2014 when it was awarded an FDOT grant to run 5 separate road safety operations on A1A between June and August of that year.
19 warnings and 19 citations were given to the 119 drivers pulled over during those operations. No warnings or citations were given to the 18 pedestrians and 6 bicyclists stopped by police.
