Daytona Beach, FL – A record amount of rain fell in the Daytona Beach area as a nice blast of cold will follow the rain for the weekend and into next week.
That’s the word from the National Weather Service after 2.30 inches of rain fell at Daytona Beach International Airport Thursday night, breaking the previous mark of 1.86 inches set on that date (February 4) in 2006.
NWS Meteorologist Randy Lascody says the cold front coming in helped generate the heavy rain that fell on Thursday night, which at one point prompted NWS to issue a Flood Advisory for parts of east Volusia from Ormond Beach to Port Orange as well as Deltona.
“[It’s a] pretty strong front,” Lascody added. “Moisture surged northward ahead of it [and] produced a couple bands of showers and a little bit of lightning. [We] seemed to [have gotten] the heaviest rain around the Daytona area.”
If you were using a jacket to get through the showers on Thursday night, you might not want to put it away just yet. Highs on Friday aren’t expected to go past 60 degrees because of the cold front and there will be a 20% to 40% chance of rain between now and Saturday night.
The rain should go away by Sunday, with highs hitting 60 that day and climbing into the mid-60’s on Monday before dropping below 60 the next 2 nights, according to the NWS forecast.
Lows will hover around the mid to low 40’s between Thursday night and Monday night before falling just under 40 on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
Winds are expected to stay steady between 15 and 20 miles per hour between Friday and Wednesday, with the occasional gust of around 20 to 25 miles per hour.
