DeLand, FL – The son of a 100-year-old woman sits in jail after deputies say he hit her in the head with a broom when she tried to feed his cat.

As of 7pm Thursday, 74-year-old David Corning is held on $7,500 bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of battery and aggravated battery.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says Corning’s mother reported the attack the day before while at Florida Hospital DeLand.

According to the arrest report, she told deputies she walked into her son’s room to feed his cat and that’s when he started being verbally abusive towards her.

Corning’s mother says he cursed at her, told her to “get back inside” or he would kill her and then broke her glasses when he grabbed a broom and swung the handle at the left side of her head.

Per the report, the elderly woman said she never lost consciousness and went back to her room for the night, fearing what her son might do if she reported what happened.

The report noted that there was no visible signs of injury on Corning’s mother, but her doctor is ordering a CAT scan to see if there’s any internal injuries.

When questioned afterwards at the Robin Hood Drive home he shares with his mother, Corning denied hitting her, saying she needs to be Baker Acted.

According to the report, Corning claimed his mom was sitting in a chair in his room when he accidentally hit the vacuum cleaner and its handle broke his mom’s glasses.
