Ormond Beach, FL – A South Carolina man is identified as the person who died in a fiery recreational vehicle accident in Ormond Beach earlier this week.

78-year-old Craig Leigh of Piedmont died around 1 AM Monday near the Exxon gas station on the 1600 block of North US 1, close to where US 1 meets Interstate 95.

The Ormond Beach Police Department says it appears the RV was trying to leave the interstate from the southbound side when it ran off the road, entered a ditch and exploded after striking a tree in a nearby Dairy Queen parking lot.

Leigh – identified as the driver – died at the scene and was so badly burned that forensic technicians were needed to identify his remains, according to OBPD Officer Keith Walker.

“The crash is still under investigation,” Walker added.

58-year-old William Byrd – a Georgia man who was also in the RV at the time of the crash – was pulled out of the burning vehicle by witnesses, but not before he suffered 3rd-degree burns.

Paramedics took Byrd – an Alpharetta resident – to Halifax Health Medical Center from the scene. He’s since been transferred to the burn unit at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire.

OBPD hasn’t released any other information on the incident at this time.
