Volusia County, FL-The man who hit and killed two people in New Smyrna Beach and left the scene of the accident has been sentenced to five years in prison.
39-year-old Brian Kennedy was driving his work van the night the couple was hit and killed on S.R. 44 near the New Smyrna Beach Walmart in August 2013.
Kennedy told his employers he had hit a deer. His employer heard news reports about the accident, became suspicious and called police. Kennedy later turned himself.
The victims were 26-year-old Savannah Jo Dejarnette and 24-year-old Zachary Tyler Kahle. Investigators say the two were walking from their disabled vehicle when they were hit. Both were dead at the scene.
A jury found Kennedy guilty.
Kennedy was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
