Port Orange, FL – 4 former local athletes are thrown in jail after police say they used the Internet and a gun to rob a man trying to sell an iPhone.
20-year-old Davarez Bryant of Crestview, 19-year-olds James Cuthbertson and Laterrio Jordan of New Smyrna Beach and 18-year-old Detraijon Halton of Edgewater were all arrested Sunday afternoon by the Port Orange Police Department.
POPD says all 4 suspects were stopped in a vehicle around 2pm as they were leaving The Pavilion shopping mall near the intersection of South Williamson Boulevard and Summer Trees Road.
According to the arrest report, a 25-year-old man told detectives he made a post on Craigslist about selling his iPhone 6 and that’s when a man called him looking to buy it.
The victim claims he and the man he spoke to on the phone arranged to meet in front of the Home Goods store at The Pavilion and it was as he and his roommate showed up that he spotted 4 men in a black Chevy Impala.
Per the report, the victim handed the phone to one of the men who had gotten out of the car after taking out the SIM card and wouldn’t allow the phone to be given to another man in the car until the Impala’s engine was turned off first.
It was after the engine was turned off and the phone was in the car that the victim and his roommate claim a man in the car had a silver handgun and told them to “back off”, according to the report.
POPO says the vehicle took off soon after that, but officers managed to stop it before it left the shopping mall.
All 4 suspects confessed afterward and face several charges, per the report.
As of 6pm Monday, Jordan is held on $10,000 bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of robbery with a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm. Halton’s also held on $10,000 bond on the robbery with a firearm charge.
Bryant is held on $26,000 bond on charges of robbery with a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and 2 counts of aggravated assault. VCJ records show he was also arrested in June 2015 for cocaine possession, loitering or prowling and tampering with physical evidence and in July 2015 on 4 counts of assault, 2 counts of burglary and tampering with physical evidence.
Cuthbertson left VCJ after posting bond on charges of using a vehicle during a felony and robbery with a firearm. VCJ records also show he was arrested last June for loitering or prowling.
Bryant, Halton and Jordan played football at New Smyrna Beach High School, while Cuthbertson played basketball at Daytona Beach’s Mainland High School.
Bryant accepted a scholarship to Florida State University out of high school but never played a down for the Seminoles. Cuthbertson committed to play at Emmanuel College in Georgia after his time at Mainland.
