New Smyrna Beach, FL – New Smyrna Beach is looking for public input to help create a long-term plan for one of the city’s most vital areas.

A meeting to discuss the master plan update for New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport will start at 6pm Tuesday from NSB City Hall Commission Chambers at 210 Sams Avenue.

NSB Municipal Airport Manager Rhonda Walker says the goal of the meeting is to get a sense of what the public would like to see from the airport going forward, especially in the next 5 to 10 years.

“This meeting will provide our citizens a forum to learn more about the ongoing master plan update study,” Walker added.

City staff and the consultant team from Michael Baker International plan to discuss the master planning process – which takes around 18 months to do – and study objectives as well as go over the existing airport conditions.

Walker says the study will eventually yield a preliminary forecast of airport demand that she and her staff plan to use to chart the airport’s future.

Among the things being considered are a terminal parking apron, more hangars to add to the 77 2-planer hangars and 13 commercial hangers already on-site and rehabbing Runway 220, which was initially created during World War II and hasn’t seen any pavement work since that time.

Walker says there simply hasn’t been money to get that runway re-surfaced and they can’t get grant money from the Federal Aviation Administration because Runway 220 isn’t a primary runway.

Airport officials hope to get the Florida Department of Transportation to contribute money to the project now that one of NSB Municipal Airport’s main runways has been re-surfaced and the other is going through the process of being re-surfaced.

Walker says the plan will also address the industrial park section of the airport and try to project long-term growth in that area, especially as it relates to the rest of the airport’s growth.

More meetings are planned for the future, per Walker.
